Treatments for Shoulder Pain

Your shoulder specialist may recommend rest, heat or medication for pain relief. Physical therapy may also be prescribed in the early stages. Cortisone injections can provide temporary relief, although this is generally not considered a long-term solution. When treatment options are not effective, there are surgical alternatives such as shoulder joint replacement that can help reduce or eliminate shoulder pain and allow you to regain range of motion. It is important that patients suffering from chronic shoulder pain consult a shoulder specialist to understand the full breadth of treatment options available.

Surgical Options

If your doctor recommends surgery, there are several options for patients that may be used to address shoulder joint replacement. Shoulder replacement surgery involves replacing the damaged joint with synthetic components.

Depending on your condition, your surgeon may perform a total shoulder replacement, in which both sides of the joint are replaced, or a partial shoulder replacement, where only the ball is replaced. When shoulder pain and damage has reached an especially advanced stage, a procedure known as a reversed shoulder replacement may be recommended.
